Dear Church Family,
On January 6 at our Mission Board Business Meeting, one of the objectives we adopted as a church body was to make youth and families a priority in our finances, time spent planning, and people resources. We announce a Fasting and Prayer initiative, which you have heard us promote in our weekly Sabbath worship.
On January 28, we will begin our corporate focus in seeking God's will for the Mount Dora Seventh-day Adventist Church in the areas mentioned above. We will meet Sunday through Friday in the fellowship hall at 7:00 pm and pray together. Each evening we will have a different focus of our prayer time to give permission for the Holy Spirit to guide us in personal and corporate preparation to receive His instruction. Each session will last 20 - 40 minutes. We will finish our time with a celebration "break-fast" Sabbath, February 3 at 8:30 am.
Our desire is to make "space" in our lives so that we can clearly hear Him. This is called "fasting." Fasting in choosing something that we willingly set aside to make that "space" available so we can hear God. Fasting does not necessarily mean giving up food for a day, but it can include that. If television, Facebook, computer time, leisure activities, excessive work, etc. needs to be set aside so that we are more available to receive His word for us, then that is what we choose to set aside for the week. In fact, make this a matter of prayer before Sunday, asking God to guide you in choosing what would best allow have that openness to hear Him. I personally have chosen to eliminate the use of electronic media in all forms that is not directly connected to my family and work. I am also setting aside one day during the week to abstain from food and eliminating refined sugars for the week, to help clear my mind.
This Sabbath we will be handing out a schedule of our daily prayer focus, and will be asking you to commit to spending this week seeking God's direction so that we can be effective in Connecting Youth and Families to the God of Hope and Peace.
Thank you for being an active part in the amazing Body of Christ we call the Mount Dora Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Seeking First the Kingdom of God,
Tom Baker, Pastor
